Nicole’s Knitting Corner: Fingerless Mitts, Featuring Owls & Skulls

Okay, Friday was crazy. Sorry for not getting this up yesterday.

But I do have some new knitting to show off, and I didn’t want this to become a Big Thing Hanging Over My Head. So I’m breaking one of my own rules to show it off today, on Saturday. I can do that because it’s my blog.

Anyway…

So first, I’ve been working on a commission. I made some “owlie” fingerless mitts for a friend of mine a couple years ago. They were gray with blue embroidered eyes. Recently my friend told me she lost them and asked if I would knit her another pair.

I was delighted to do so. These are so easy to knit, and I never fail to get a huge kick out of the cabled stitches that create the “owl” shapes.

As you can see, these are nearly done. I have one last owlie cable round to finish at the top, the bind-off, and then the thumb. I may also add a crocheted edge to the bottom. It’s rolling up, and I’m not fond of the look.

I’ve put these on hold for now, however, because I’m making these.

What are these, you ask? They’re fingerless mitts (knitted flat — they still have to be seamed) with little skulls on them. I made these for a friend’s son who just had open-heart surgery — yesterday, in fact. No worries, he came through with flying colors. He’ll have a long road of recovery ahead of him, but he’ll be just fine.

All that’s left, aside from the seaming, is to graft on the thumbs. I’ve never done stranded colorwork before I did those little skulls, but it wasn’t anywhere near as nervewracking as I had always assumed it would be. In fact, it was fun.

I can’t wait to find out how he reacts when he receives these little beauties.

There you have it – the knitting that has occupied my time the past couple of weeks.

I have a special project coming up that involves knitting too, but I’m going to wait until I finish these two projects before I launch into it. I can’t wait to tell you all about it. Hopefully some of you will want to get involved with it as well. (Whatever is she talking about?! You’ll see!)

Till next time!

Nicole’s Knitting Corner: I’ve Got a Monkey, Let’s See the Monkey! … and other kiddo projects

Hello and welcome to the first post at Nicole’s Knitting Corner! Every Friday, I’ll share what I’ve been working on.

This week, I’ve been working on a batch of gifts for my dear friend Janette’s adorable children (and child-to-be). She’s having her first daughter in just a few weeks, and she kindly asked if I would make the little cherub a hat. Baby hats happen to be one of my very favorite things to knit, so of course I said “absolutely!”

Here it is:
